THE CHOPPER HELICOPTOR
People, since the very beginning, have dreamed of mastering air flight.
Inventors turned that dream into reality with flying machines.
Igor Sikorsky had a vision of creating an aircraft without wings that
could achieve vertical flight from the rotation of overhead blades. Thus
was the born the helicoptor. One amazing thing about the helicoptor, which
characterizes it, is the fact that this flying machine looks unable to
deliver on its promise, which is to fly up and down, backward and forward
and right and left. Harry Reasoner, a US Broadcast Journalist, made the
comment "An airplane by its nature wants to fly...A helicoptor does not
want to fly. It is maintained in the air by a variety of forces and controls
working in opposition to each other, and if there is any disturbance in this
delicate balance, the helicoptor stops flying, immediately and disastrously.
There is no such thing as a gliding helicoptor."
By saying this, Reasoner laid bare the fundamental reality of helicoptors...
That the machines have complex designs and that flying them is extraordinarily
complicated. The pilot has to think in three dimensions and must use both arms
and both legs constantly to keep a helicoptor in the air. Piloting a
helicoptor requires a great deal of training and skill, as well as continuous
attention to the machine. Hats off to the pilots who flew these amazing
aircraft in Vietnam and other wars.
